Dear Editor,
I believe the future of America is in dire straits. If a Republican wins, I believe Mitt
Romney is a better choice that McCain because the latter can be a 'hothead'! Romney
will not be a loose cannon like McCain. America desperately needs a cool-headed
businessman (or businesswoman) approach to turn our economy around.
I am concerned with the Obama-Clinton disputes!
He is slinging mud at her by quoting her various comments OUT OF CONTEXT!
I am Caucasian, but like Clinton, I agree that Martin Luther King’s Dream could not
have been fulfilled without the passage of the Civil Rights Bill by LBJ--- at that time in
history!
The Clintons, like me, have ALWAYS supported Civil Rights of ALL minorities!
MLK was the catalyst that made the dream possible!
I hate how Oprah has been instrumental in creating a Black versus White political
race!
I would have voted for Colin Powell if he had run for President at any time; including
now. I have nothing against Obama, as a man.
The main issues I have with him being President are: his lack of political experience,
the fact of most of his Congressional votes being a fence-straddling "Present"---
instead of a firm "Yes" or "No"--- and the very minute possibility that he is a Muslim
"Mole" (despite his membership in a non-mainstream 'Christian' church).
Instead of pitting Obama against Hillary, the two should team up and I believe Obama
should be the Vice President. Hillary can 'show him the ropes' and then Obama can
run as President after her time in the White House.
I prefer John Edwards, but he does not stand a chance of winning. The longer
Obama spars with Clinton--- the more likely the Republican Party will win again and
we cannot afford another Republican in the White House!
America is quickly becoming the new Third World nation due to President Bush
bankrupting our country with his ‘War on Terrorism’ (a thinly veiled plot to control
foreign oil in Islamic Nations) and the corporate ‘outsourcing’ of jobs overseas!
Our minimum-wage earners cannot remain afloat with the current high fuel and high
utility costs! Our farmers and ranchers are also in crisis for the same reason!
I fear the financial collapse of America and the return to a 1930’s depression era.
Sincerely,
N. Burnett

Dear Nona,
You have passionate beliefs, but tend to be anxious and fearful at the same time, a
mix that sometimes leads to irrational conclusions. Like some people you think that
because Obama’s father was Muslim that he may somehow be in league with
terrorists. That’s a major stretch in understanding, since this would deny a well-
educated, responsible person an opportunity to lead this country simply because one
of his parents happened to be a member of a religion from which extremism and
terrorism has developed, uncommon for the rank of people who legitimately follow
the faith of Islam. Even President Bush acknowledges that we should not judge the
ordinary Muslim believer by the acts of the violence of some of its adherents.
Extremism and violence are part of the history and practice of a number of religions,
including Christianity, as evidenced by members of white supremist groups who call
themselves Christians but who teach and practice hatred of certain individuals and
groups. If we were to look into the backgrounds of every American, we would likely
find that in all families there are people who are mentally ill, divorced, not Christian,
have criminal histories, came to this country illegally, and a host of other situations.
This would eliminate every American for consideration for the Presidency.
We live in a new America where young people are leading us in a direction where
race, color, religion, and national origin, will no longer used as determinants for
political office. We should salute our youth for bringing light and hope to this
country, for being fearless, optimistic, and determined to be better than those who
have kept our country in the darkness of prejudice and discrimination.
Whether one votes for Hillary Clinton or Barack Obama or not, we should as a nation
celebrate the fact that at last we have a woman and a non-white as serious
contenders for the Presidency of this country. This is a great message to the rest of
the world watching all of this. It communicates that we are indeed a free people, that
we believe and practice that all men are created equal, and that equal opportunity for
the highest office can be realized at last.
Indeed Martin Luther King had a dream, and his joy would be great were he to be
living in these days of change and progress. So would our nation’s founders. Obama
is part of our future. He was educated primarily in Hawaii, at one of the most
prestigious private schools in the United States. His mother and grandparents
struggled hard to pay for his education. In Hawaii he learned about many cultures at
a very young age. The fact that he had a Muslim parent means that he has personal
understanding of the beliefs of a people that constitute a large percentage of the
world. He has the look and feel of a world citizen. How much more could we ask of
a candidate than that? What does an African American have to have more than what
he has to be elected?
I suggest you look for specifics of experience and abilities rather than looking for
arbitrary sidelines that may or may not have anything to do with a candidate’s
beliefs. Romney is Mormon, but I doubt he would impose his beliefs on the rest of
the country.. Qualities of leadership should be the criteria for selecting the
President. I recommend Lee Iaccoca’s book on leadership that spells this out. Use
his criteria as a measuring rod as opposed to issues that likely have no relationship at
all to an individuals potential performance.
We have many fine candidates, Democrat and Republican, from which to choose our
President. Fear should not be the impetus for choice. That has been the lesson of
the past. Secure we must be, but there are no candidates whose patriotism should
be questioned, whose dedication to responsible leadership is not part of their
personal patterns and characters. Indeed we are lucky for we have so many good
people from which to choose this nation’s leader..
Thanks for writing.
Sincerely,
Carol Forsloff
